Redux means to bring back; revive. Remix is media which has been altered from its original state by adding, removing, and/or changing it. There is no original or master artwork that stands alone in time without history or an audience. Change, as an essential element of life and yet art about art is self-conscious and self-referential much like a serpent eating it’s own tail.
ORT: a morsel or scrap on a table
Ort Project is the collaborative union of artists Oona Nelson and Anna Noelle Rockwell, whose lush installations, photographs and interactive gestures explore and critique aspects of consumption, abundance and decay. Their point of reference is the table, a site of dining and display, which they use as a staging platform for painterly nature morte tableaux in which the artists create ephemeral installations and photographs of edible and inedible subjects. Their work takes on the implications of food beyond that of nourishment, instead ORT marinates the more insidious, but visually rich implications-- poisonous, gluttonous or hedonistic—to offer intoxicating critiques of social attitudes with collective perils. Within their work Ort blends the influence of art history, the contemporary cult of convenience and abundance, along with the corresponding environmental threats and distorted value systems, into uncommon balances of the grotesque and the beautiful.
Nature is often called cruel. I believe nature is neither cruel nor kind. If you believe in science above magical thinking, you know that one’s existence is temporary. And, that you are minuscule in the cosmic scale. This occurrence of you as a creature is of no real concern in the larger game of life. The universe does not care whether are happy or sad. We are made up of micro organisms and chemicals beings produced by organisms. We live and die and turn into other things that make up all things in the cosmos. Whether you are child of god, a nihilist, or somewhere between, Memento Mori are reminders of mortality; vanity of earthly life and the transient nature of all earthly goods and pursuits. As if to say meditate on death, take joy in life, and prepare for dusk.
Soh Wat is a character created for a novella project in process. A photographic novella of some thirty plus images; a rambling, bloated, ill-shaven story with subplots within subplots and a blurry midsection. Soh like so many, finds herself adrift, wrestling with vanities mirror. A woman navigating the modern world as best she can without a moral compass or any compass at all.
